Today, the evaporative emission control system (EVAP for short) is used in virtually any vehicle that consumes gasoline, and your Ford Explorer is no exception. The system carries out two main functions: prevents gasoline vapors from escaping into the atmosphere and helps maintain stable pressure in the fuel tank. When the ambient temperature gets higher, the pressure inside the tank increases due to fuel vapors, but instead of just leaking outside, they get into a special vapor canister located under the hood or closer to the tank.

The canister is filled with charcoal and can accumulate these vapors. When the running motor has reached a certain temperature, the ECU can open the purge valve located in the line between the canister and intake manifold. As a result, the flow of air blows through the canister and takes the vapors into the manifold. However, over time, this solenoid valve can get clogged or stuck in a partly open position, which is bad for the system's efficacy. Commonly, the "Check Engine" warning appears in such cases.
