The Excalibur Phaeton is an astonishing classic car, one of the variants of the highly-praised American model that proudly carries the name of the legendary sword of King Arthur. The history of the Excalibur car traces its roots back to 1963 when Brooks Stevens, a design consultant at Studebaker, created a special automobile inspired by the 1928 Mercedes SS and based on the chassis of the heavy-duty Lark Daytona convertible. Stevens' idea was to build a "contemporary classic", a vehicle that would use present-day running gear hided under narrow roadster-styled bodywork. The car turned out to be fabulous: the seats were adopted from Studebaker vehicles, the dashboard was taken from the Hawk GT, the flexible exhaust sections were sourced from Mercedes, and the emblem on the radiator grille depicted Stevens' own symbol – a cross in a circle. This "Mercebaker" debuted at the New York Show in 1964 thanks to the support of Jerry Allen, the show organizer, and instantly became a tremendous success. As Studebaker abandoned the model upon the very beginning, Stevens founded his own Excalibur marque.

It became a family operated company based in Milwaukee, Wisconsin, as Brooks Stevens designed all the models and undertook all the steps connected with the development of the brand together with his two sons, William and David. They followed two essential principals: the cars were meticulously built with no rush and as many components as possible were manufactured by the brothers in order not to be dependent on external suppliers. The Excalibur used glass fiber body panels and was powered by a Chevrolet 5.4L V8 engine, making the model a strong performer as it could deliver up to 300 hp. The first series of the model, produced from 1965 till 1969, was originally available only in a two-seater Roadster body style, but later a perfected Excalibur Roadster with longer fenders and running boards and a convertible four-seater Excalibur Phaeton version appeared.

In 1970, the Stevens brothers redesigned the model for the second generation. It gained a new ladder chassis, that was 2 inch longer than the previous one, Corvette-sourced suspension components and four-disc brakes, and bigger tires. Moreover, the Excalibur was equipped with the new 5.7L V8 engine mated to the “Muncie” 4-speed manual or Turbo-Hydramatic 3-speed transmission. It was capable of accelerating 0-60 mph in less than 7 seconds, with a top speed of 149 mph. The model featured a long list of additional equipment that included air conditioning, stereo radio, driving lamps, adjustable steering column, etc. The Excalibur Series III, introduced in 1975, greatly boosted the production figures. It was essentially the modified Series II with a new chassis and motor. The Excalibur Phaeton was the most popular version, for instance there were 1,065 Phaetons and only 76 Roadsters manufactured in the years from 1975 through 1979. After two more major redesigns, the model was dropped in 1989, with over 3,200 Excaliburs produced in total.

Floor Mats were impeccable in all areas, trim, logo and plushness of carpet. Just drove my Jeep this AM with no shoes on and they were extremely comfortable to rest my feet on. This is my seconds pair of Mats from Lloyd and the Quality has not changed.
