The Veloster is part of Hyundai’s hot hatch segment. First introduced to the public in 2011, it hit the market to replace the FWD Tiburon built between ’96 and ’08. The 2020 model year is a sleek hatchback based on the European i30 N that is sold in the U.S. as the Elantra GT, which is a more affordable alternative. The 3-door Veloster employs either a 147 HP 2.0 L four-cylinder or a 201 HP turbo 1.6-liter four-cylinder. Designed for high-torque applications, the new gearbox improves power delivery and squeezes a bit more torque out of the engine (278 versus 260 lb-ft). This happens thanks to turbo overboost and faster gearbox response. The “wet” transmission design improves cooling and lubrication, and the N model so equipped reaches 62 mph in 5.6 seconds.

The 2020 Veloster received no major changes in terms of standard equipment. The Turbo R-Spec is equipped with a 6-speed manual, while the only available option for the Turbo is a seven-speed dual-clutch transmission. But on the upside, the R-Spec trim boasts several welcome safety features like rear cross-traffic alert and blind-spot warning. With the back seats down, there’s almost 45 cubic feet of total cargo capacity.
