Recognized for its sporty image and performance, the Audi TT rolled onto the scene in 2000 as a hatchback coupe. It was initially powered by a 1.8L turbocharged inline-four cylinder engine directed through a five-speed manual transmission (a six-speed was available as an option). As with most Audi models during these years, the TT could be had with either a front-wheel drive or with the Audi's Quattro all-wheel drive system. A year later, both a roadster and Quattro versions of the TT were introduced, with the Quattro showcasing up to 225 horsepower. In 2004, Audi premiered a new 3.2L V6 engine configuration that threw out an additional 25 horsepower and was paired with a six-speed "automanual" DSG transmission.
2005 welcomed in the addition of the Quattro Sport. Outfitted with a heftier 1.8L turbocharged engine, it was also 165 pounds lighter allowing for both a boost in horsepower and greater acceleration. Amid some controversy a second generation of the Audi TT finally arrived for the 2008 model year. It is similarly styled to the first generation TT, but boasts a distinctive Audi single-frame front-end grille. It is available in two trim levels: 2.0T and 3.2 Quattro. The 2.0T is a four-cylinder engine and offered with front-wheel drive while the 3.2 shows off a 3.2L V6 engine capable of around 250 horsepower with 236 pounds-per-foot of torque. Both models are available as either a hatchback coupe or roaster and feature more aluminum parts than the previous generation.
Inside the TT, there are loads of standard luxury features and accessories. Leather/suede upholstery, steering wheel mounted audio controls, climate control, cruise control, power seats, doors, and windows are all included. As for the safety, front and side airbags, traction control, four-wheel ABS brakes, a tire pressure monitoring system, electronic stability control, and daytime running lights are featured standard. Since its arrival, the Audi TT has garnered praise from most major media outlets. It was nominated for Motor Trend magazine's Car of the Year award (2000), named to Car and Driver's Ten Best list (2000, 2002), and branded a Consumer Guide Recommended Buy (2002, 2004).
One way to describe the Audi TT is "physically creative." When drivers think of a sports car, they envision velocity, power, and a curvy, aerodynamic shape. The TT is the progressive counterpart to those cliches. Is it sporty? Absolutely, but with more flair and drama than your normal sports compact. The TT showcases several stand-alone characteristics and unique parts, like the conceptual 2-door hatchback design, stiff suspension (Audi Magnetic Ride), and superior acceleration. Combine those with the already reputable Audi engineering, and you have one dynamic and stylish automobile.
