Fresh from last year’s full redesign, the Ford Explorer heads into 2021 without any big changes. In an attempt to attract a younger demographic to its mid-size crossover, Ford gets back the XLT appearance package that adds a number of unique accessories inside and out. Externally, the spruced-up SUV wears 20-inch Carbonized Gray wheels and the grille painted in the same color. Skid plates hint at the model’s readiness for adventure. Hood lettering and dual exhaust tips round out the cosmetic exterior changes. The interior is trimmed with ActiveX material that adorns the seats, doors, and center console. Factory choices in the way of special packages and options are limited, but the aftermarket offers endless possibilities for upgrades. Customize your vehicle to your heart’s content with our 2021 Ford Explorer accessories and parts.
Last year, the Explorer returned to its rear-wheel-drive roots – of course, with all-wheel drive as an option. This transition made the SUV more off-road-ready while keeping it comfortable on pavement. On the road or off it, the engines installed in the 2021 Explorer provide ample thrust for moving its weight forward. The entry-level engine is a 2.3-liter EcoBoost 4-cylinder that delivers a healthy 300 hp, while its torque output, rated at 310 lb-ft, is higher than that of some V6 engines offered by the competition. With this powerplant and proper equipment, the 2021 Explorer can tow up to 5,300 pounds. A step up is a 3.0-liter EcoBoost V6 that powers exclusively the Platinum trim level. This mill makes 365 hp and 380 lb-ft of torque and ups the tow rating to 5,600 pounds. A 400-horsepower version of that engine is available, reserved for the sporty Explorer ST and its more affordable variant named the Enthusiast ST. The latter features the same mechanical bits as the ST minus some amenities. It does, however, offer a lot of niceties such as a 12.3-inch screen for the instrument cluster, 20-inch rims, a heated steering wheel, and advanced electronic driver aids.
For those looking to save fuel and extend the driving range, there’s the Explorer Hybrid that can cover over 500 miles on a single tank. Its powertrain uses a 3.3-liter V6 and an electric motor, which produce 318 hp in total. Regardless of the engine, Ford’s 10-speed automatic transmission routes the power. The electrified powertrain is available on Limited and Platinum trim levels. The top-shelf King Ranch model has joined the Explorer lineup for 2021. It adds a luxurious touch to the cabin dressing it up with brown leather and comes with the Premium Technology pack that includes massaging front seats, a big 10.1-inch portrait-oriented touchscreen, and 14-speaker audio. The new King Ranch sits on 20-inch wheels with trim-specific logos and features a few unique exterior accessories.
Another model that Ford expands its 2021 Explorer lineup with is the off-road-ready Timberline. It is not an appearance package, make no mistake about it. In fact, it comes with the essential off-road goodies that make it more capable on rugged terrain. AWD is standard, and a ground clearance is a bit higher thanks to a 0.8-in. suspension lift. There is a Torsen limited-slip differential on the rear axle to help with traction when the tires start slipping – by the way, Bridgestone's all-terrain rubber is standard. The Explorer Timberline uses beefy shocks from the Police Interceptor version, which have been tuned for off-road performance. Tweaked bumpers improve approach and departure angles, while steel skid plates protect the SUV's underbody. Cosmetically, the Timberline separates itself from other trim levels with a different grille design, red trim, and 18-inch wheels.
The Ford Explorer has a high driving position like a proper SUV should. The seats are comfortable and supportive for those in the first and second row, while the third row is kid-sized. Access to the third row is easy thanks to a push-button mechanism. With all seatbacks up, there is still enough space for cargo that measures 18.2 cubic feet. The 2021 Explorer is as competent of a family hauler as it has always been, but each and every family has unique needs. Make your vehicle more comfortable for weekend getaways and family vacations, add some practical features, all while keeping it in good condition – for any of your requirements, we have high-quality 2021 Ford Explorer parts and accessories.
