The new 2019 Ram 1500 was unveiled in January 2018 in Detroit, Michigan. The completely new fifth-generation model is designed to attract first-time truckers with improved efficiency and a host of luxurious features. Buyers who are used to the comfort of cars and crossovers will not be disappointed. The 2019 Ram offers a car-like ride, but it doesn’t mean that the new truck isn’t capable of doing a heavy-duty job. The new model is claimed to carry a massive 2,300-pound payload and tow up to 12,750 pounds. The 2019 Ram is the first half-ton hybrid pickup truck on the market. Its 48-volt electrical system provides an improvement in performance and fuel economy. For those who value the utilitarian functions of the vehicle the most when the price is a determining factor in choosing a truck for work or the business fleet, Dodge offers the 2019 Ram 1500 of the previous generation adding a “Classic” badge to its tailgate. The 2019 Ram 1500 Classic is offered in a variety of cab and bed configurations and is available in lower and middle-class trim levels. At the same time, some premium features of higher trims became available as an option.
The all-new ladder frame made of 98% high-strength steel with the use of cutting-edge technology allowed the truck to drop 100 pounds, offering 17% of total weight savings. Apart from that, the new frame offers better protection in case of a collision thanks to a patented design of front rails that effectively dissipate energy from the impact. The use of aluminum in the hood, tailgate, engine mounts, and other strategic areas helped to drop another 125 pounds, which meant that the new Ram 1500 has lost approximately 225 pounds. The 2019 Ram 1500 offers two engine choices – updated versions of a 3.6-liter V6 Pentastar capable of 305 horsepower and 269 pound-feet of torque, and a Hemi V8 producing 395 horsepower and 410 pound-feet of torque. Both engines employ the new hybrid eTorque system that uses the energy of deceleration to charge a 0.43 kW-hr battery and then, for short bursts, adds 12 horsepower and 90 pound-feet of torque to V6 or 16 horsepower and 130 pound-feet of torque to V8 engine. Starting in late 2019, the model will also be available with an ultra-efficient EcoDiesel V6 good for 260 horsepower and 442 pound-feet of torque.
Ram claims that the new model has the most aerodynamic body in the full-size truck segment with astonishing 0.375 coefficient of drag, which even further improves fuel economy. Standard models are offered with a front air dam that helps to reduce drag by dropping 2.5 inches while driving at high speed. The 2019 Ram 1500 is equipped with an optional air suspension that can lower the clearance for more than half an inch. The implementation of a heater/cooler of the differential in rear-drive trucks allows for the use of lower-friction oil while helping to heat up the gear lubricant faster in cold weather and control its temperature when hauling heavy loads. In addition to the model’s fresh interior, you can get an active noise cancellation system, optional 19-speaker stereo, and even a Uconnect infotainment system with a fantastic 12-inch touchscreen.
Those in search of exclusivity and luxury will be able to choose from several variants. The Ram 1500 Rebel is back, boasting its recognizable bodywork. The Laramie Longhorn edition is here as well, promoting Western-style luxury. Externally, there is a distinctive two-tone trim, LED lights front and rear, and unique grille and wheels (20- and 22-inchers). But the real deal is inside, with lots of interior details stressing the truck's Texas-style appeal. Case in point, materials and patterns like wood, metal, alligator skin print, and full-grain leather. The rear seats are ventilated – a feature exclusive to the segment. The Texas theme continues in the 2019 Ram 1500 Lone Star edition that is on sale exclusively in this state. This new model pays homage to the original "Texas Truck," offering the unmatched level of durability, comfort, and technology. Essentially, it offers the same package as the Big Horn but features unique Lone Star badges, so the residents of all other states won't be left out. The truck has a distinctive hard-working appeal that made it so popular among Texas shoppers. It offers a choice of 3.6-liter V6 and 5.7-liter V8 engines, 4×2 and 4×4 layouts, Crew and Quad cabs, and bed length options measuring 5 ft.-7 in. and 6 ft.-4 in. The standard look is all chromed-out, but more reserved “Sport” and “Black” packages are available. Continuing the lineup of region-specific versions, Ram launched the Sport trim of the 1500 truck for the Canadian market for 2019. The Canadian version has unique all-black interior and specific exterior features including bi-LED headlights, black grille, and fancy black exterior treatments and badges. Another option for buyers from North is the Ram 1500 Classic equipped with the Sub Zero Package. It offers comfort amenities that make driving more pleasant during cold Canadian winters, which include a heated leather steering wheel and heated front seats. The rig also comes standard with a 115-volt power outlet, vehicle alarm, and remote start.
To show the most appealing options to those who want to customize their truck, Mopar came up with a special version of the Big Horn Sport 4×4 equipped with more than 200 Mopar parts. Externally, the Mopar-customized Ram 1500 features 18-inch wheels with red rings complementing its Flame Red exterior color, black-finished aluminum running boards, thin black fender flares, special badging, and more. The interior continues the theme with Katzkin black leather seat covers with red stitching and embroidery. Performance-wise, the truck received a 2-inch lift kit, cold air intake, and cat-back exhaust made from stainless steel. Still, among Ram customers, there are small business owners and contractors who need a basic no-frills truck. The 2019 Ram 1500 Tradesman was designed specifically with these truck buyers in mind. To create a simple utilitarian workhorse, Ram deleted some luxuries, while making an emphasis on capability. The model offers a standard Class III trailer hitch and wire connectors. The Quad cab variant is promised to be able to tow up to 12,750 lb and haul up to 2,300 lb. Additional features that workers will appreciate are a locking diff, trailer brake controller, and lifted suspension. Ram resurrects the Warlock nameplate from the 1970s by introducing the special-edition 1500 model. Although it offers no retro touches like the gold stripes of the original truck, it has some interesting pieces of equipment right from the factory, including a lifted suspension, powdercoated bumpers, and dark-accented headlights. It can also be ordered with the Mojave Sand Package, which aside from a unique body paint comes with a striped sport hood and 20-inch aluminum black wheels.
For those who live in northerly states, Ram offers the North Edition based on its half-ton truck, which comes with everything needed to fight off the cold and snow. While being lifted by one inch, the Ram 1500 North Edition has a 4x4 transfer case with selectable settings, locking rear axle, heavy-duty shock absorbers, and winter-rated Falken tires. Tow hooks are readily available for situations where the owner or someone else needs tow service. Remote start and heated mirrors come standard, while the interior welcomes in with heated front seats and steering wheel.
Ram has been sponsoring the Kentucky Derby for nine years in a row, and to commemorate this long-time cooperation, the 2019 Ram 1500 Kentucky Derby edition was launched. Only 2,000 examples of the special edition truck are available, based on the Limited trim. That means that buyers get generous equipment, including leather interior with wood and metal accents, 12-inch touchscreen, trailer hitch, air springs at all four corners, power running boards, and more. The key visual edition-specific feature is "Run for the Roses" graphics on the rear fenders available in several color options.
