For over four decades, the BMW 3-Series has been setting standards in its category. It seems not that long ago that the sixth generation of BMW's quintessential “Ultimate Driving Machine” rolled out, but with serious competitors like the Alfa Romeo Giulia, Audi A4, and Mercedes C-Class constantly gaining new appealing features, the Three starts showing some signs of aging. Changes that are set to make the 3-Series lighter, more progressive inside and out, and, presumably, more fun to drive, will come with the new G20 generation that is scheduled for debut for the 2019 model year. The seventh-gen 3er will also get new variants across the lineup.
The 2019 BMW 3-Series goes on a diet. Moved to the new CLAR (cluster architecture) platform that also underpins the X3, and built using lighter elements within its body structure, the upcoming 3-Series loses 121 pounds while growing in dimensions. It's quite a considerable amount of weight, and this diet is expected to add greater nimbleness and dynamics to the G20-gen car. Along with lighter weight, the 3er gets a boost in power that comes with new members of the lineup, designed to bridge the gap between mainstream models and the M3. The first one is the rear-wheel-drive M340i M Performance, equipped with a 3.0-liter I6 good for 360 hp. Another M Performance variant to join the range is the M340d xDrive with four-wheel drive and diesel power. Its business end is a 3.0-liter biturbo engine that churns out 320 hp. The reworked gasoline engine line is promised to provide a reduction in emissions level and fuel consumption by up to 5%. The automaker's xDrive system was upgraded for this year for better adjustability and performance.
The first model scheduled to reach American shores is the 330i. Together with the M340i, it deletes a manual transmission option for the U.S. market, being offered exclusively with an 8-speed automatic for the first time. The gearbox gained a shift predictability feature, formerly utilized in Rolls-Royce vehicles, which uses navigation system data to adjust shifts according to the route. The 330i retains the 2.0-liter turbo four that gets a lighter crankshaft, new software, and benefits from injection system and variable cam timing upgrades and optimized heat management. The result is more horsepower and torque compared to the last year's model, which is now rated at 255 hp and 295 lb.-ft. The inline-six fitted to the M340i, also found in the Z4, offers 382 hp and 369 lb.-ft. This model comes with the standard M Sport diff, which is an option on the 330i.
In terms of design, the 2019 3-Series was made to resemble the 5-Series, yet retaining its own identity. It's also as aerodynamically efficient as its bigger sibling, providing a drag coefficient of 0.22. The new-generation 3er shares the design language with other modern members of the lineup. Up front, the kidney grille merges with the headlights that feature Halo DRLs. Out back, there are remodeled, sharper-looking tail lights and a lip spoiler lining up the trunk. While developing the new Three, BMW aimed to raise the bar when it comes to visual appeal, performance, dynamics, and technical quality, so as to target the same level as its class-leading rivals. The new 3er retains the character it's known for, and what we offer is a multitude of 2019 BMW 3-Series accessories allowing you to personalize your car.
