The Mini Cooper’s history started back in 1959, when British Motor Corporation first released the Mini, a small, fuel-efficient, and affordable vehicle. The Mini Cooper, the performance version of the original Mini, was launched two years later. It was designed by John Cooper, a famous builder of Formula One cars. In 1963, Mini debuted an even more performance-oriented Cooper S, which took part in a number of races and turned out to be a resounding success. Since 1994, Mini has been a subsidiary of BMW Group, and in 2001, BMW released a whole new Mini lineup that was completely different from the original one in terms of mechanics and performance. The modern Mini Cooper wraps precise German engineering in a fancy shell with a strong retro attitude.
For 2018 model year, the Mini Cooper has been given a substantial update, as its ongoing third generation has come to the mid-cycle point. The 2018 Mini Cooper’s exterior hasn’t been altered heavily - a few tweaks here and there can keep it fresh. The new Cooper gets a new instrument cluster, head-up display, and improved smartphone connectivity. The Mini Cooper is available in three-door and five-door hatchback body styles (the Hardtop model) as well as in a Convertible form. What’s more, three submodels will help you alter your vehicle to your performance needs. All body forms are offered as the Cooper or Cooper S, while a special John Cooper Works (JCW) trim is only applicable to the three-door Hardtop and Convertible. All models can seat up to five passengers.
The 2018 Mini Cooper is powered by a 124-horsepower 1.5-liter 3-cylinder turbocharged engine. Opting for the Mini Cooper S adds a 2.0-liter inline-four turbo engine good for 189 horsepower. The performance-oriented JCW’s powertrain includes a tuned 2.0-liter four-cylinder that pumps out 228 horsepower. All models come standard with a six-speed manual transmission and can be equipped with an optional six-speed automatic.
