Then even fuel doors were considered too unsightly and gas caps disappeared behind moveable tail lights, chrome trim panels or license plates.

In the muscle car era of the 60s and 70s, gas caps were once again on display as auto makers sought to emulate race cars with their quick fill gas caps. This style cap can still be found on some modern performance models, but as a rule the gas caps on most contemporary vehicles reside behind a body-color fuel door.
